BIG CHANGES

SEPARATE MINISTRIES OF

DEFENCE

CANBERRA, November 12.

Big changes in the Federal Cabinet, involving the splitting up of the administration of the three fighting services into separate Ministries and the creation of a new post for defence co-ordination, were announced by the Prime Minister today.

Mr. Menzies will take the portfolios of Minister of Defence and Co-ordina-tion. Mr. Street becomes solely Minister for the Army; Mr. Fairbairn becomes Minister for Air; Sir Frederick Stewart becomes Minister for the Navy in addition to Minister of Health and Social Services. Mr. Casey remains Minister of Supply.

A special committee of Ministers will in future constitute, in effect, an economic Cabinet. The War Cabinet will comprise Mr. Menzies, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Casey, Mr. Street, Sir Henry Gullett, Sir Frederick Stewart, Mr. Fairbairn, Senator Foil, and the Acting Treasurer, Mr. Spender.
