SHORTAGE OF BUTTONS
"New Zealanders will soon have to adapt themselves to wearing buttonless clothes," remarked an Importer to a "Post" representative today. "The importation of pearl and other buttons is drastically curtailed, yet common sense would dictate that the reverse should be the case. When clothing could be imported without restriction it naturally came into this country with buttons on, and now that the clothing has to be made locally one would expect that facilities would be provided for importing buttons, which are not manufactured locally in any quantity, to put on the garments. But local manufacturers are expected to turn out the clothing which has hitherto been imported, yet they are prevented from obtaining the necessary buttons, some lines of which are very scarce, while others are not obtainable at all.
