HOPE GIBBONS SHIELD j PORT NICHOLSON WIN AGAIN Their success in the first race was repeated by tbe Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Cbib's senior A team oil Saturday afternoon in the second of the three tapes in the annual contest for the Hope Gibbons Shield,- which was held on the Petone Club's course. The conditions were good. The course was between i the Petone Rowing Club's shed and Trentham, a distance of 25 miles. There was also a 16----mile event for juniors, the turning point being at Stokes Valley. This race ajso was won by the Port. Nicholson team. The Poneke Club's senior A team was unlucky from the start. The first mishap occurred when V. Kvans punctured his front tyre at the starting line. He was able to change tiie wheel just in time to start. The next mishap, which resulted in the team retiring from the race, occurred when thoy tried conclusions with a taxi which was turning in the road just across the Hutt Bridge on the Lower Hutt side. This left the Petone senior A team and the Port Nicholson senior A and IS teams to fight out Hie issue. At the turn the Port Nicholson senior A team was lmln 20seo ahead of the club's 1$ team, who in turn were Ssec ahead of Petone senior. A. On tho return Petone made up this leeway and finished 13 2-ssec ahead of the Port Nicholson senior H team and 2min __: 2-ssec behind Port Nicholson senior A. The' winning time, liOmin 3. It was a triumph for the "veteran" rider of the club, the ex-amateur,, «T. Morrlss, It is 20 years ago since Morrlss started riding and ho can recall many thrilling finishes on track and rood with othor champions. Off a handicap of SV.mln with C. Williams, he caught the limit men off 13min in the Taita Gorge On the return journey, and, riding very strongly, finished with something In reserve from A„ Wright. The scratch men, Sinclair, Herries, and Panders, found the handicap just too much. Herries finished fifth and .Sinclair sixth.
