TRAINER'S DEATH
MR. F. W. J. TILLEY

WANGANtTI, This Day. The death has occurred of Fred William James Tilley, formerly a leading horse trainer, of Fordell, at the age of 75 years.
The late Mr. Tilley's association with horses commenced at Riccarton back in 1879. He made his start with T. Lyford, once well-known as a rider and who later took on training. He was next with S. Higgott, D. Jones, and R. Ray, and then transferred to the North Island iri 1887. Two years later he went to Melbourne, but he returned in 1891 and set. up as a trainer at Fordell, and the first horse he had was Commotion, with whom he won a number of hurdle races. His long, association with the Duncan family. commenced nearly forty years ago, and for the members of this family he trained such horses as Client, Tamatete, Ararat, Tukia, Gienrdss, Enthusiasm. Laughing Prince, Consent, Cashier, etc. For other owners; he trained Asteroid,. Frisco, Equitas, Oratress, Mandane, High Falutih', Amythas, lady Lucy, and many others. Owing to ill health he retired from active training nine., years ago. Horses trained by him won over £150,000 in stakes, winning no less than 660 races.—"Binocular."
