SALVAGE TUGS
POSITION OF PORT BOWEN
SEA'STILL ROUGH
'The stranded Port Bowen was pounded by heavy seas during the weekend, but the vessel's hull was not damaged. Because of the high seas no further salvage work, has been possible, and it is not likely that any attempt to tow her off the beach at Castlecliff wiil.be made for.two weeks yet.' As there will be nothing for them to dp at Wanganui for a fortnight, the three: tugs; which have been assisting the - salvage operations, Lyttelton 11, Tola) f arid Terawhiti, left for ; iheir home ports'this morning, according to the Port.Line's Wellington office. The WahgariUi Harbour Board's tug, Kahanui, is standing lay in the meantime. The Wellington Harbour Board's Toia and - the Union Steam Ship Company's Terawhiti should arrive here late tonight. ■''■' Before the next .spring tidel at Castlecliff on August 15 an attempt will be made to discharge the Port Bowen's cargo, and the tugs will then be recaUed; to v Wanganui for another attempt toLfree^^ - As the Port Bowen is in the surf, it is .impossible for""lighters to work her cargo, and it..will .have to.be brought ashore >by oilier means. A conference was- held at Wanganui yesterday between Captain S. E. A. Gregory, marine superintendent of the Port Line in New Zealand; "Mr.JN. D. ißihnie, general manager of the Hne in New Zealand; Captain D. W. Gibson, of-the line's ' Sydney office; and Mr. A. Bryan, of the Sydney^ Marine Underwriters' and Salvage; Association.. The 35 tons of salvage •**gear : which Captain Gibson brought from Australia -is being sent . irom" Auckland to Wanganui. ' Arrangements are now being made for the discharge of cargo, and a large . steam log-hauler has arrived at Wanganui from a King Country sawmill. This will be set up on the beach opposite the Port Bowen and the cargo will be hauled:ashore over a wire. Sand has built up between the beach and the. Port-Bowen, and at low tide it is possible, to walk out,to the boat without the water, rising above the ktieesX ."■'■
