Special forecast for Wellington:— North-westerly winds, becoming strong at times. Weather cool and changeable, with some showers but with bright intervals. ' .. The forecast for the Dominion as.a whole issued by the Meteorological Office at noon today is for northwesterly winds at first in most easterly districts, but otherwise between westerlies and southerlies prevailing, force fresh to strong generally, and reaching gale force in many places. Weather squally and rather changeable generally, with heavy showers in western and southern districts extending at times in eastern areas. Hail probable in places, and snow on the granges in both islands. Snow showers are possible, extending to the lower levels in the South Island, Temperatures will be cold. The anti-cyclone which has covered eastern Australia for some time has begun to spread over the northern Tasman Sea, but pressure has remained low over southern New Zealand and to the east. A series of depressions accompanied by showery conditions has continued to move upon the Dominion from the south. Strong south-westerly winds which at jtimes reached gale force in exposed positions continued yesterday, but this morning had turned to westerlies over the North Island. Although the weather has continued to show further improvement occasional showers have continued to fall inmost districts, but have been more frequent in western areas and in the far north and south. The highest rainfall recorded yesterday' was at Greymouth. 74 points. Nugget had 60 points. Early! this morning there was considerable! thunderstorm activity in the neighbourhood of Cook Strait. There were many frosts in the South Island last night, but temperatures have risen slightly The weather in Auckland yesterday was changeable and showery, with intervals of sunshine. A strong gusty wind blew from the west. Temperatures were cold, a maximum of 57 de-. grees and a minimum of 49.3 degrees. The rainfall was 11 points. This morning the weather was cloudy with occasional showers and a 1 strong westerly wind. ; -
Except for a few clouds in the morning, i the weather in Wellington yesterday was fine and sunny, and 6.9 hours of bright sunshine were recorded. For a few hours in the morning a moderate breeze blew from west-north-west, a most unusual quarter for the winds in Wellington. Later it turned to the north-west and freshened during the night. There was a welcome rise in the. temperatures yesterday, the maximum, 56.9 degrees, being the highest since July 1; The minimum temperature last.night was 40.1 degrees. Early this morning there was considerable thunderstorm activity round the Strait, and lightning was visible from the city. The morning in Christchurch yesterday was overcast. The cloud cleared by noon and the afternoon was fine and sunny. A light south-westerly breeze freshened during the afternoon. Early this morning the skies clouded over, and intermittent rain began to fall. Temperatures were moderate, but a frost of 8.8 degrees was recorded last night. The maximum temperature was 51 degrees, and the minimum 36.5 degrees. Rainfall totalled 4 points.
Affording welcome relief from stormy conditions, the weather in Dunedin was fine yesterday, with bright sunshine. A light south-wester-ly breeze continued today, but became strong during the night, when there were a few .showers, which totalled 6 points of rain.
