The Voice of a Tree

LITTLE PEpPLE:

Two short days are all that are left of July, What a month of surprises it has been. Shall we call it the Weather Man's bran-tub? It's rather fun not to knetw what sort of a day you will find awaiting you when you. wake in the morning, 'specially when sometimes there's such a lovely surprise as snow in the garden. One pixie found enough of the soft white flakes to make a snow princess, and somebody else built a turreted castle.

August, the month of the trees, is almost here. The Elf and I icohder hoiv many of you have seen the beauty of trees ... tlie intricate design of trunk and branch and twig that makes a tree a delight to see even in winter when it is leafless. Take your pencils and sketch books into a park and see how many forms of trees you can draw. Ygu'll find them as different as people in the street. Here are some lines worthy of your memory boxes, pixie ones:- — "I am God's tree. I shade you from the burning sun in summer and give you a cool place to rest or play. I keep off the bitter ivinds in winter. In the driest weather J keep the moisture in the soil and in the wettest weather my. roots keep the earth from washing away. Without me the ground would be baked dry and soaked weL^ ' stDo not cut my bark or bind my trunk or break my branches. If lam attacked by insects, spray me. If wind or storm injure me, have me mended. Feed me with good soil.and do not drain the water away from my roots. , "In gratitude I ivill give you beauty to look at, pure air to breathe, and comfort and protection in both winter and sum- ■ mer. And the birds that live in my branches will sing fo you Nature's song of rejoicing. 9' V%ho is going to share in a tree-planting ceremony next week? Why not plant a tree of your own . • • a golden kowhai in honour of Centenary year! My love to every elf! ~ FAIRIEL. P.S.- — Let trees remind you of birds, Ring people. Our special ißird Page will be printed in August. — F. ,
