MADE SOCCER HISTORY
Southern Transvaal made Soccer history early this month when they defeated the English touring team at Johannesburg by the only goal of the match. England have sent four teams to South Africa during the past two decades, and this is the first occasion that an English eleven has been beaten in the Union. The South African success was gained on merit, for the home side had pace I and thrust which the Englishmen could not match. The English mid-field play was good, but they were weak in front of goal, ihe speed and vigour of the defence causing them to fail to utilise several opportunities. There was also some shakiness in the tourists' defence, and the only excuse which can be made for the team is that the hot sunshine, and the rarified atmosphere of the Rand, were too much for them. In the later fixtures, however. England won three Tests against 'So>u&, Africa, 3-0, 8-2, and 34.
