RUGBY LEAGUE

Newtown turned on some good Rugby League football against St. George at Newtown Park last Saturday, and there was not the difference between the teams that the score indicated. McElwain went very well as last man down in the Newtown pack, and Holmes, McLennan, and McGregor were a trio of hardworking forwards. Johnson, a promoted reserve grade player, indicated that he will turn out a good forward. R. Chalmers at centre was in good form, his try, after selling a couple of "dummies," being a particularly good effort. Beaton's tackling was deadly as usual, and Drew and Hemmington were prominent. Newtown missed their new five-eighth, Stewart, on Saturday. Stewart has done well in the back division.

At the Showground, Central's ability to turn on the pace in the concluding stages of the game enabled them to defeat Randwick, but with not too much to spare. Killilea played a great game for Randwick in the forwards, but Berry was definitely not his usual self. Beasley, from the reserves, played a fine game at half for Randwick. Without being brilliant he did all a half-back should do. For Central, Roberts at full-back was outstanding, his try being an example of what football brains and alertness can accomplish. Coughlin, now playing on the wing . instead of full-back, proved a strong and determined runner, and scored two good tries. Duff was in good form and sent the ball out well, and the two Hale brothers both played useful football. J. Corless, replacing G. Marshall (injured) at half-back, did not get many chances to show his worth. H. Corliss, from the reserve grade, played a brilliant game as last man down in the Central pack, and O'Halloran and H. Cootes both played good forward games.

have met the Australian Kon Richards in a deciding contest, but the Australian's eye, injured in their recent Melbourne bout, has not, according to the Stadium's medical officer, healed sufficiently for Richards to fight for at least another five weeks. Mr. J. Munro, manager of Richards, stated recently that Richards had challenged Len Harvey for the British Empire light-heavy-weight title. The challenge had been lodged by a representative in London. Mr. Munip is awaiting further particulars. Danny La Verne had a most comfortable win on points against Micky Miller in a twelve-round boxing contest at Greater Newcastle Stadium recently, states the "Sydney Morning Herald." The match was colourless, but continual demands by a large section of the crowd to Referee Joe Wallis to declare it "no fight" were unjustified and appeared to arise from a grudge held against Miller by the demonstrators as a result of an indifferent showing in his first and only previous bout at the Stadium nearly twelve months ago. La Verne was more energetic than Miller throughout, and it only took a couple of rounds to show that he must be the winner if the contest went the full distance. The Otago senior and junior crosscountry championships, which were held at Wingatui last Saturday, were . favoured by ideal weather, and, although the course was fairly heavy, good times were put up by the foremost runners. The contests attracted large fields, including all the most prominent cross-country performers in Otago and Southland, states the "Otago Daily Times." The senior title was won by A. R. Geddes, of Civil Service, who ran a particularly fine race, second place being filled by T. O. Kennedy, of the Mornington Club. The senior teams race was won by Civil Service, which thus gained its fifth successive victory. 1
