WORKMAN FINED
MATCHES IN MINE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, ' July 28. Valentine Harvey was fined £2 10s in the Magistrate's Court this morning for having matches in his possession in the Dobson Mine on July 21. The defendant said he was unaware i that the matches were in his pocket, | The prosecution said that miners had j been warned of the danger' of sueh1 practices because of gas in the -mine. Previous prosecutions apparently had had no effect. A substantial penalty was requested. Mr. Ferner, S.M., said it should be unnecessary to impress miners with the necessity of ensuring their own safety. He took.into consideration that the defendant was young and had been employed in the mine only three weeks. As the result of the dismissal of Harvey by the manager last Friday, miners refused to work. Negotiations were deferred pending the result of Court proceedings.
