REVENUE INCREASES

RAILWAY EARNINGS

Increases in net operating revenue earned by the New Zealand Railways for the four weeks ended June 24 and for the financial year to date are disclosed in the abstract of the Railways Working Account published in the Gaiette last night:

, The figure for the four weeks was £12,876, compared with a loss of £48,201 for the corresponding period last year, and for the year to date, £175,789, as against £46,081 for the same part of 1938. Total operating expenses were £597,----051 for the four weeks (last year £588.307") and for the year, £1,791,996 (£1,782,466). The capital cost of open lines as at March 31. 1939, is shown as £58,676,608 as against £56,065,187 at the same date last year.
