CRITICISM RESENTED

HOSPITAL BOARD

COUNCILLORS' REMARKS

Complaint of ill-informed criticism of Hospital Board members by City Councillors was made by Mr. W. J. Mason at last night's meeting of the board. Mr. Mason said he thought it was wrong that members of tiie City Coun^ !cil should use unparliamentary lanjguage about members of the board. Eeferring to a newspaper report, lie said that the board had been described as a "plunging board." Further, the statement haa been made that it would be better if the board were wiped out. The report also referred, to "the irresponsible actions of the Hospital Board." Mr. Mason said that, reacting the report, one would judge from the language used by members of the council that the Hospital Board was a "set of congenital idiots." He dio. not know whether the board should take official notice of the remarks. The criticism. was hot war--1 ranted. Members of- the City Council did not know of the work ■ involved by members of the Hospital Board in connection, with the schemes recently proposed. During the year board members had to attend about 130 meetings. It ill became a public body so to criticise another public body. Mr. A. H. Carman, saiid he did not think that many of the Hospital Board members were "thin1 skinned." The Jity Council seemed to forget that the jame people who elected the Hospital Board elected the council. The board vas elected for a specific .purpose. The ooard, and not the City Council, would nave to take responsibility for what tt did. ;;"-;■. ; The. chairman (Mr. J. Glover) said the best -answer to the criticism was that the statements showed; that those people who made them, were irresponsible. Such persons- absolutely irresponsible, and knew nothing about hospital matters.
