O.G. 18, Kia Ora 16. Wellington East dominated the play for the first ten minutes and soon Jed by 6 goals to 2. At naif-time the score was 9-6 in Wellington East's favour, and, on resumption of play, Kia Ora. after Wellington East had scored a further two-point lead, struck form and soon had the score standing at 12-11, only to lose further chances in fairly easy positions. From then on, although scoring alternated. Wellingtjpn East O.G. maintained the advantage, time being called with the score Wellington East O.G 18. Kia Ora 16. Training College proved just too strong for Awatea, winning by 20 goals to 18. Once again. Training College teamwork enabled the forwards to secure good shooting positions while good individual efforts by Awatea kept the game even. University defeated Island Bay O.S. by 16 goals to 10. Play was fairly even, but Island Bay O.S. lacked force in getting the ball through University's defence." FIFTH GRADE TOURNEY. Wellington's team to defend their title of joint premiers with Canterbury is a strong one, and should do well at the New Zealand tournament, which commences about August 23 .in Invercargill. Following are the members' records:— Forwards. T. Weybourne (Kia Ora) represented Wellington in the second A team at Rotorua in 1937. and last year was a member of the successful Wellington team which defeated the New Zealand team before it left for Australia. With, only a year or two of senior A experience she has proved herself one of Wellington's outstanding forwards. B. Cattin (Wellington East 0.G.) has just left college, and her great accuracy and smart field work, added to her youth, point to her being one of Wellington's coming players. j M. Jenkins (Wellington East 0.G.) gained representative honours in 1936, .then was in the 1937 second team, and last year was a member of the team which played at Timaru. gaining. North Island representation. She is an excellent worker in the forward third and the harder the opposition the better she plays. She can be relied on to come to the fore when her team is in a tight place..
J. Willson (Kia Ora) is another forward whose field work opens up play for her team to get into position. She first represented this province in the senior B grade. 1930-31, and in 1932 was chosen for the team to comoete at the Dominion tournament, but she was unable to travel. Her position then was in defence. She did not gain honours again until 1936, when she changed her position to that of forward, and was [selected. For her olay in 1937 she was 'selected as a member of the New Zealand team for Australia. She holds a North Island badge. Centres. J. Crewes (Awatea) was a Wellington representative at both the 1937 and 1938 tournaments, and this year is playing better than ever. Her sure handling of the ball and excellent pass away are assets to her team. M. Howe (Kia Ora) has been one of the best centres in New Zealand for the last few years, and is particularly good at making openings for the pass from the defence.- Her quiet, effective work is invaluable. She is another player who has gained a place in the Wellington team in two positions, as a forward in 1933, then in 1936 and 1937 as centre, in which position she also played in the 1938 New Zealand team. V. Stone (Wellington East 0.G.) has a long record behind her, in 1930-31----32 being a member of the senior B representative team, and in 1935, 1937. and 1938 being 'in the Wellington A ( team. She holds North Island honours. Her reliability in centre gives! her team opportunities to force the j attack, and she is also very good -'it interceptions. N. Metson (Training College) is a newcomer to the Wellington team, having first played for South Tara--naki against Wellington thirds in 1934, and in 1937 and 1938 being in the trials the Auckland team. Her lack of height is no handicap, speed and clever passing carrying her through. Defence. Jean Mitchell (Wellington East O.G ) has been a member of Wellington's tournament team since 1932, last ye^rj being vice-captain of the New Zealand team which toured Australia. She has been one of the mainstays of the Wellington East defenc for' a number of years, and her experience in changing the trend of play means much to the team. She captained the Wellington team in 1935-36-37. Jan Mitchell (Wellington East 0.G.) gains honours for the first time, and well deserves them She is playing one of the best defence games in Wellington, her interceptive abilities more than making up for any lack of height J. Williams (Kia Ora). whose unexpect d anticipate of her opponent's play breaks down attacking forward movements, plays in the A team for the second time, having previously been in the B team in 1934 and 1937. She has also held honours as a for "E. Graham (Awatea) finds the new type of play for defence to her liking, her quick interceptions on the line sending the team on the attack time after time. In 1936 she was selected as a forward, and played in the Christchurch tournament. Although chosen as a member of the second A team for Rotorua in 1937, she was unable to travel.
