ARMAMENT PROFITS
BRITISH FIRMS
FINANCIERS' PART
Attention was drawn by Mr. W. T. Anderton (Government, Eden) to the huge profits made by armament firms in Great Britain. He quoted dividends as given in a recent cable message from London. He contended that if the British Government had made an arrangement with Russia the peace of the world would have been proclaimed. "The British Government has nothing in common with the ideals of the Russian Government," he said, "and it has nothing in common with the producers of the world. It has everything in common, however,.with the Nazis and totalitarian. States of the world."
Mr.. Anderton said ihe nations of the world had been spending £2,000,000 a day on armaments and it was rumoured that Great Britain was about to lend Germany £1,000,000,000. A new system k>f international banking was showing its head. If money could be diverted from the manufacture of armaments and used in the interests of providing the people of the world with the necessaries of life, it would not be long until we reached Utopia. "How can this be done when we have individuals amongst us who believe in war and that it is inevitable?" he asked. •
He supported the suggestion of the Prime Minister that a world peace conference should be called.
