GALLOPING AT AWAPUNI
I (Special to the "Evening Post") | PALMERSTON N., This Day, | At 8 o'clock yesterday morning the i Awapuni tracks were covered with snow to a depth of close on an inch I and there was a "bone" in the ground. |The roads were glassy, too, and it was some time before horses began to arrive. It was hoped that the snow and ice. would soon disappear, but a cold southerly breeze did not help matters, and no fast work was attempted for a couple of hours. By that time, however, several trainers nad decided that they would not work their horses until after lunch, when the conditions were very much.better. Among the horses that were exercised before the going was considered safe for fast work were Colibri, Debretts, Tarffra, and Royal Sign. _ First to attempt anything serious was Stargono (P. Rae), who was schooled over three fences, giving a satisfactory display. , V In the first * serious gallop of the morning, Girl Pat and Parian sprinted five- furlongs in Imin 6sec, the last three in 40sec, and it was very good time under the conditions. Guiding Light came home well from the three furlongs in 43 4-ssec, Onahati covered a similar distance in 43 2-ssec, and Thrasos did a little better than even time over half a mile. ■ Sunbeam (I. Rohloff) and Ruaform (Kanake) were schooled over three hurdles, jumping very safely. Ruaform finished in front, but Sunbeam was not hurried into his fences. The feature gallop before lunch was that of Tidewaiter and Cuisinier, who ran six furlongs in Imin 25 3-ssec, the last three in 43 l-ssec. Tidewaiter was never off the bit in the run homeY and Cuisinier as a result was i a head to the good at the post.: The snow had disappeared and the tracks had dried but quite a lot before the afternoon work, the features of which were the schooling bouts ' by Battle Pomp, Bing Boy, and Hunting Lore." Battle Pomp (J. McDowell) was the first to work, and he cleared three hurdles in great style, jumping with plenty to spare. .•'■•' Next was Bing Boy (McDowell), who is the topweight in the Hack and Hunters' Hurdles tomorrow. He fought for his head until he sighted his first hurdle, and then he settled down to work, jumping brilliantly and with plenty of pace on. Blue Steel was against the bit over six furlongs, and Bridegroom, after working on the sand, moved easily over seven on the course proper. Hunting Lore (P. Jaryis), who beat everything except Aussie Ra at Marton, was schooled over three hurdles, and although he rapped two of them he gave a very sound exhibition. He should be in good order for Manawatu. S. Anderson rides Onahau and Thrasos. tomorrow.
