AMERICAN MESSAGE
OFFICIALS' INTERPRETATION

AUCKLAND, July 26,
No confirmation .of--the cabled message from San Francisco that an airmail service from San Francisco to .Australia will be inaugurated on August ; 15 by Pan-American Airways has been received by .officials,at the Pan-American base, at Mechanics Bay, and .aviation .circles are at .a. loss t<> understand the reference to a service to Australia. The most general interpretation it that the message refers to a resumption of flights to New Zealand and the subsequent dispatch of Australian mails across the Tasman either by steamer or by air. With moorings and floats in position and the operations staff on duty, the Auckland base has been ready for some-time to receive the new 74-pas-senger Boeing clippers which it is proposed to use on the Pacific run. The latest reports suggest that the newlyestablished base at Canton Island is now. probably available for use, while it is also likely that work at Noumea, in New Caledonia, is equally well advanced. As a result, the stage is set (for an early resumption of the serjvice. ■ . , : ■ ■ . . .. ■■ '■
