ST. PAT'S COLLEGES
WIN FOR SILVERSTREAM
In a bright, interesting game in good weather at Silverstream yesterday afternoon, the two St. Patrick's Colleges showed a high standard of Rugby. Silverstream proved the better team, but Wellington did not let them have their own way by any means, as the final score of 22-13 shows. The teams were as follows:— St . Patrick's, Silverstream. —F. Baker; E. Taripo, I. Butler, G. Whincop; B. Whittle, J. Ransfield; T. Tiller; G. Tayler, R. Bonske, W. O'Donnell, T. Quickenden, J. McKellar, J. Karam, C. O'Donnell, J. Nicholson.
St. Patrick's, Wellington.—-B. Doyle; B. Jones, N. Hastings, K. Sullivan; W. Newton, R. Metcalf; D. Harper; W. Maskill, J. Simes, Hutchison, B. Mahoney, R. Hassett, P. Cataldo, J. McNeill, G. Sheahan.
Wellington opened strongly, and carried play to the Silverstream twentyfive, but solid forward play saved a score. Silverstream had to force, but from the drop-kick play went down into Wellington territory. Wellington used the backs to get back into a favourable position, and Newton opened up for Wellington with a neat potted goal. 4-0.
Silverstream retaliated ■ with a series of back movements which took them down to within ten yards of the Wellington line. Newton helped to clear, but Baker found the line in a handy position. Scrummaging took Silverstream right down to the Wellington line, and from a scrummage a forward went over for a try. Ransfield's kick hit the post. 4-3.
Silverstream were now well in their stride, and from their own twenty-five the backs got away in fine style. The ball went out to Ransfield, who ran through the defence with a nice turn of speed to score in the corner. The ki^ck missed. 6-4. Another neat back movement' gave Whincop his chance to go down the line and score in the same corner. 9-4.
Wellington had a spell on the attack, until Ransfield cleared nearly to halfway. Jones missed with a penalty. Baker used another to improve Wellington's position, and Harper almost got through before he was thrown out. Solid forward work saved Silverstream, and the backs carried the ball to half-way. Infringements nullified Silverstream's good play, however. Metcalf kicked a good penalty for Wellington. 9-7. In the second spell, O'Donnell scored a try for Silverstream after a tricky run. He missed the kick. Butler sent Ransfield away again to score a try, which he converted. Wellington now took a turn, and from a melee on the line a player touched down. An interception by Hastings made the score 17-13, in Silverstream's favour. O'Donnell scored the last try, and Ransfield converted, making the final score: Silverstream 22, Wellington 13.
