PHYSICAL WELFARE
HOLIDAY RESORTS
COUNTIES' RESPONSiBILiTIES
A development during the last two years in the field of extra^ urban planj ning in a number of counties of New Zealand was touched on by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E . Parry, addressing the Institute of County Clerks. The development of rapid transport, he said, had made it inevitable that development would occur in a number of the county areas. The Government was desirous that this should Stake place on organised lines.
I The county ■ clerks were fully alive to the problems, but he suggested that there was need for some forward movement. Many holiday resorts of New Zealand were under the control jof county councils and tuere, if anywhere, adequate planning was necesI sary if thosa resorts were not to be I spoiled. That created new problems ■jfor county clerks, but his experience 'had proved that they would rise to the responsibilities which the new movement had placed upon them. Then, again, there was the physical welfare movement, in which counties had a definite responsibility. In urban areas borough councils were rising to their responsibilities, and he was very anxious that the facilities which were being granted to the urban populations should be extended to those who lived in the county areas. "I sincerely hope," Mr. Parry added, "that each and all of you will throw your weight behind this physical welfare movement and endeavour to sponsor in the areas in which you find yourselves an active development of recreational activities."
