BLIND AND DEAF

A MUCH-LOVED PERSON

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

Miss E. Biddle was the guest of honour at a very happy birthday party given in her honour at the Blind Clubrooms recently, when fifty club members and many of her old friends were present. Miss. Biddle, who was 79 years of age, has been both blind and deaf for 63 years, and those who have known her well find l.er cheerful disposition and keen sense of humour an inspiration. She can both read and write Braille, which enables her to correspond with blind persons in different parts of the world.

Miss Biddle received many telegrams and letters of congratulation which were conveyed to her by manual language. She also received many useful gifts, one being an eiderdown quilt from members of the club.

At afternoon tea a two-tier birthday cake placed in front of the guest was described to her, for which she expressed pleasure and thanked Mrs. Vrede, the club hostess who made the cake. Mrs. Good, on behalf of Miss Biddle, thanked those present for contributing to the afternoon's pleasure. Mr. Brian O'Brien sang two Irish songs, accompanied by Mr. Eric Bell. Songs were sung by two blind girls, who were guests; also part songs by the Sunbeam songsters under the direction of Miss Clarice Browne. Items were given by Bernadine Leamy, Pam Stockdale, Loma Hills, Dorothy Murray, and Ngaire Walker.
