RAILWAY REVENUE
IMPROVED POSITION
PRELIMINARY FIGURES
In reviewing. the preliminary figures of railway revenue for the four-weekly period ended June 24, the Minister of Railways (the Hon. P. G. Sullivan) said today:
"The gross revenue for the period j amounted to £712,497, compared with; £631,234 for the corresponding period j of last year, an increase of £81,263. The; working expenses increased by £20,058, from £657,943 to £678,001, leaving an improvement in the net revenue posK tion for the four weeks of £61,205.
"For the year to .date," said the Minister, "that is, from April 1 to June 24, the gross revenue shows an increase of £190,336, the difference between £2,107,480 in 1938 and £2,297,816 in 1939. although there is one day less in the accounting period for 1939.
"The working expenses for the year to date over the same period increased by £58,874, from £ 1,982,094 to £2,040,968, leaving an increase in net revenue of £131,462, which rose from £125,386 in 1938 to £256,848 in 1939.
"The improved revenue, position is being fully maintained during the three weeks of the July period which, in the Department's experience, is/ the slackest revenue month of the year," concluded Mr. Sullivan.
