ORDEAL ABOARD
"NO GARDEN PARTY"
'No person on shore can realise what those men had to go though." said Mr. T. Lovegrove, senior stevedore at the port of Wanganui, praisthe officers and crew of the Port Bowen for their work, says the liWanganui Herald.' - Mr. Lovegrove was on board from Wednesday week until Tuesday last. "They were on duty night and day meeting and dealing with cases of emergency as they, arose," said Mr Lovegrove. "Often for. hours on end they carried on in wet clothes without complaint. In fact, their efforts were almost superhuman. In times of emergency such as this the conditions in the vessel are very much more strenuous than when she is at sea. One after another of the facilities went, including the lights, and moving about the Port Bowen at night was no garden party." At night the ship is full of creaks and groans as each roller thunders against the starboard side, and it is difficult for the crew :o sleep. The officers have had very little sleep since the ship stranded, having kept constant vigil. They were greatly relieved on Tuesday when the Wanganui waterside workers were sent ashore, because of the anxiety for the safety of the men during Sunday, and Monday nights. '
