THE WHITE ANT
WELL ESTABLISHED
IN AUCKLAND AND NEW PLYMOUTH
"I can say without hesitation that the white ant is ir this country, and that these aliens are well established in Auckland and New Plymouth at least," stated Dr. D. Miller, of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, today upon his return to Wellington from New Plymouth and Wanganui. He said that some doubt had been expressed as to the accuracy of his identification of this pest, but he was quite sure that the white ant had invaded the Dominion. Although New Plymouth was affected, the white ant did not appear to have obtained a footing in Wanganui. The white ants in New Zealand, said Dr. Miller, had come from Australia and were of the mud-building species. They, were very destructive to wooden structures, and it had been already found in Auckland that extensive damage had been ''one within the space of the last six years. The climatic condition? prevailing at Auckland and New Plymouth favoured the establishment of the white ant probably more than in • other parts of the Dominion, but it could not be said for certain that it would not make its appearance elsewhere.
