EFFECT OF AMENDMENT

In a notice of question addressed to the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C Webb), in the House of Representatives, this afternoon, Mr. F. W. Doidsje (National, Tauranga) asked whether the Minister had noted the first result of the amendment to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, which became law last week, and if so, what action did he propose to take in regard thereto? "The Minister, in introducing the Bill, declared its purpose was to act as a deterrent to striken," said Mr. Doidge. "Within a week of the Bill passing into law, a union on strike in Auckland made use of its provisions to obtain an increase in pay of l£d per hour, making it clear that the measure will not act as a deterrent, but as an incentive, to strike."
