SERIOUS BURNS
SPEEDING MOTORIST?
PETROL CATCHES FIRE

SALT LAKE CITY. July 26.
A. B. Jenkins suffered serious burns when his automobile caught fire during a projected 24-hour endurance run on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The car, which had been circling a 12$mile track at average speeds in excess of 170 miles an hour, burst into flames when petrol in the cockpit ignited while the car was travelling at a very high speed.
Jenkins returned to the pit, where his crew, which included his son Marvin, extricated him at considerable risk. The driver was rushed to. hospital at Salt Lake City, 135 miles away. The doctors said Jenkins had bad burns on his right arm and leg.
Jenkins, at the 500-mile mark, had exceeded his own records, reaching an average of 171.31 m.p.h. and, for a three-hour period, 171.41 m.p.h.
