OBITUARY
LORD MOUNT TEMPLE
(Received- July 4, 9 a.m.) I.ONPON, July 3. The death has occurred of Lord Moynt Temple. William Ashley, first Baron Mount Temple, was born in 1867 and was_a son of the Rt. Hon. Evelyn Ashley. He was educated at Harrow and. at Magdalen College, Oxford. He served in the Grenadier Guards from 1889 to 1898, and was an Alderman ofi the Hampshire County Council, High Steward of Rpmsey, and a mem* ber of Parliament, holding various seats in the Conservative "interests, from 1906 to 1932. In 193,1*13 he was a Conservative Whip. In 1914-15 he commanded the 20th Battalion of tho King's Liverpool Regiment, and in 1923' he became Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport. The following year he was Under-Secre. tary of State for War, and from 1924 until 1929 was Minister of Transport. He was chairman of the Anti»Socialist Union, and some time president of the Navy League. He was made a P.C in 1924 and was raised to the Peerage in 1932. He was twice married, and there are two daughters by the first union.
