PLAYING AREAS

KHANDALLAH REQUESTS

A request for the * speeding up: of the completion of Cashmere Park and Nairnville Park for the purpose of supplying playing areas; for Khandallah was made to the reserves committee of the City Cbuiicil yesterday afternoon by Messrs. 'M. S: teallbway and H Desborough.. Mr. GallOway said - that though • a great deal of work had been done on .Cashmere Park, it had not been finish? led. They had hoped that a bullddzer t could be obtained, as the gangs' oh that job had not. made very rapid 'progress. The ground would be, suit- '■ able for Association football, Rugby, and other games. Nairnville Park could be more rapidly finished also, if j a dulldozer were put on. With Cashr ! mere Park in the north-eastern, and Nairnville in the eastern, part of the suburb, sport in. the district could be better catered for. Mr. Desborough spoke of the. fine character of Nairnville 'Park, z which has a natural, grandstand. It was proposed to build a school, near Cashmere Park, perhaps by the.end of the year, but the Education Board had only some half-acre of. ground adjoining, the school. Unless the park were ■ com^ . ptetedr the children, who would only be ■ taken up to the third standard there, would have nowhere to play but on the road,! where the traffic- was heavy. ■ .■■■•• .. : *; Afterhearing the request, the chairman of the committee, Councillor W. Duncan, informed the deputation that it Was hard to find money all of .a; sudden* in the niiddle: of a .year; but what they had said would be considered. Councillor L. McKenzie : remarked that the finding of playing areas for school children seerhed- to' be more a matter for the Education, Board than for the comrriittee., ~

The Director of Parks and Reserves (Mr. J. G.. MacKenzie) is to,report\on these parks .to' the committee at ;itft next'meeting.
