WELLINGTON SKETCH CLUB

The Wellington artist, Mrs. M. E. R. Tripe, was the critic at a recent exhibition of paintings by members of the Wellington Sketch Club, the "set subject" for the exhibition being "Buildings." Mrs. Tripe d__dt with each picture individually, pointing out weaknesses where they existed in tone, colour, composition, and handling. The critic's prize for the best picture in the show was awarded to a water-colour by Mr. J. Bowie. On Wednesday evening Mr. Pat Lawlor gave a talk to the club on "Black and White Artists." Mr. Lawlor spoke at length on the work of famous artists, many of whom he knew personally A collection of original drawing's, cartoons, and book-plates in the possession- of the speaker was also shown. Familiar names included Aubrey Beardsley, David Low, Phil May, D. Souter, Tom Glover, George Finey, and Norman Lindsay. Many amusing stories concerning Australian and New Zealand cartoonists were related by Mr. Lawlor. * In moving a vote of thanks to the speaker, Mr. Carl T. Laugesen, vicepresident of the club, said that he felt sure members would agree that the talk was one of the most interesting yet given to the Sketch Club.
