CULVERDEN'S FIRST WIN

Culverden, winner of the steeplechase event at Oamaru last Saturday, is bred on solid lines, as he is by! Shambles (sire of several promising j ; jumpers, and sire of three winners at Oamaru) from Heath Lass, who produced Royal Saxon, a good winner a few years ago, and Hounslow, whose victories included the Grand National Hurdle Race. ! Culverden has been in training at various times for a number of years. but had not previously won a race of any kind. He is owned by Mr. D. A. Withers, formerly a- well-known trotting trainer. Mr. Withers also races The Sandwich Man and Donadea, who have both won races for him. All are now trained by his son, G. H. Withers. who has settled at Riccarton.
