NEW BRITISH FACTORY

TO BUILD AERO-ENGINES

A factory employing about 10,t)00 men for the manufacture of RollsRoyce aero-engines for the Air Ministry is to be established just outside Glasgow, says the "Daily Telegraph and Morning Post." It will cost several million pounds, and it is hoped that production will begin in twelve months' time. This announcement was made by Sir Kingsley Wood, the Air Minister, in the House of Commons. He said that Rolls-Royce, Ltd., would establish and manage the factory on behalf of the> Ministry. It was announced in Glasgow later that the factory is to be built on the industrial estate at Hillington, between Glasgow and Renfrew. A site of about 106 acres has been acquired for the purpose by the Government from Scottish Industrial Estates, Ltd., which operates these areas in co-operation with the Commissioner for the Special Areas in Scotland. It is anticipated that peak production at the factory will be reached in - about twenty months' time. As planned, the establishment, it is : believed, will be the largest aeroengine factory in the world. Employment will be provided for thousands of men through the creation of subsidiary industries, and it is thought that the factory itself may be further extended later. Employment for 20,000 men may be the final result of the establishment of the factory^ At first it may be necessary to bring a certain percentage of the more highly skilled workers from the RollsRoyce works at Derby, but later Glasgow will supply the demand. A training centre for workers is to be setup in Glasgow immediately. Two other aircraft factories'; have recently been .established on Clydeside: the Blackburn aircraft works at -Dumbarton and the' aircraft maintenance | factory at Abbotsinch,
