INCREASE IN TAX

A widespread rumour that the Government was contemplating an increase in the Social Security tax from Is to 2s in the £ was referred today to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) for comment after a meeting of Cabinet.

"It is the first that I have heard of it," said Mr. Savage. "It has certainly never been discussed in this room."
