WELLINGTON CLUB

OLD BOYS' MEMORIAL

The Wellington Harrier Club held the Old Boys' Memorial' Shield handicap race from the residence . Mr. R. Spence, Brooklyn, on Saturday afternoon. The trail led over a crosscountry course of about six miles, which led along McKinley Crescent to Mornington Road I and the Ridgeway,, then along the tops of the hills to Island , Bay, returning by Happy Valley Road. The runners found the hills slippery, but good times were recorded. J. Hampton, one of the limit men, ran a steady race, and won the trophy from \V. Owens, scratch. The Baptist Harrier Club held a 5!L'-mile run from Miramar Baptist Church on Saturday. The trail led through the cutting and then along the side of the hill, for about a mile north, coming down nearly to the terminus. . The runners then went over the hill to Karaka Bay and back again for runs-in from Awa Road. Results were:—Fast pack: D. McFadyen 1. G. McGregor 2. R. Wadhara 3. In- i tennediate pack: C. M. Collins ,1, D. Hogau.1 2, G. Parker 3. Slow pack: H. A. Harris 1,! R. Norgate 2, P. Farrow 3. UNIVERSITY CLUB. Despite the weather, there was a record attendance of 32 members at the University Club's run from Berhampore. In three packs, the runners followed a trail on to the hills, along the Town Belt to Constable Street, thence via Riddiford, Rintoul, and Stoke Streets to the hills near Mornington. A return was then made along the ridge and down on to the Island Bay Parade. Cool weather and occasional rain made the runners set a keen pace, which was maintained by all packs throughout tho eight-mile course. In the fast pack O'Flynn and Morpeth were always prominent, while Irving in the medium pack showed surprisingly good form. Cumber, who Is quite new in the club, was well to the fore, and should be seen in the fast pack in future. C.V.M. CLUB. The C.Y;M. Harrier Club held their weekly run from St. Paul's Schoolroom, Waiwhetu. A trail of eight miles laid by S. Hepplestone and V. Armstrong followed the road to the pipe track, along the ridge to Lowry Bay, and back via the main road, reclamation, and stop bank. The club set off in two packs, and it was not until arriving at the Reclamation that the fast pack caught up with the slow pack. K. Everard, of the slow pack, running strongly, was able to hold off the fast pack until within a quarter of a mile from home, when G. Hepplestone and K. Brooker pulled away, to finish In that order. Next week's run will be held from St. Albans, Eastbourne. • PRESBYTERIAN CLUB. An eight-miles run from the Kelb'urn Presbyterian Church was made by nearly sixty members. Tho trail was laid by P. Bay and A. Tait, of the Kelburn class. It led along Raroa Road, down Norway Street to Aro Street, up the ridge to Brooklyn, and up tho road and through Fitchett's Farm, permission having been granted. The trail then led around the outside of the Waterworks Reserve, coming down to Campbell Street, into Karori, and home down the Main Road. One pack missed the trail and were late returning, Tho first runners home were H. Watts and R. Dockery, followed by other members of their pack. A run-in was. held and .resulted: Campbell 1, Tomlinson 2, Hay 3. Next Saturday's run is to take place from the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church. On Saturday week the club championships, junior and senior, will be held at Silverstream. The St. Andrew's Trophy Race has been definitely fixed for September 9, at Auckland, and Christchurch will be sending a team. BROOKLYN CLUB. Mr. P. N. Denton sent.away the 30 starters of the Brooklyn Club in'the five miles handicap race for the Irvine Cup last Saturday. ] The course was of two laps, over beach, sand hills, and road, but through taking up a trail laid by another club, the course finally covered was nearer 6^4 miles than 5 miles. . Taking into consideration tho tough nature of the course, and the extra distance covered, some of the younger runners did well. The high lights of. the race, however, were the performances of the first three runners. J. Thompson, one of the club's younger members, ran an excellent race, and "led the others over the finishing line in great style. P. Argue was the star performer. He was conceded 50sec by the scratch men, but put up a wonderful performance and recorded the fastest time for the day (35min 39sec). A. Thompson, who finished second last year, finished third on Saturday, after putting.up his best performance to date, and recording tho second fastest tune: G. Prosser, off scratch, had his work. cut out. in trying to make up the leeway on the front men. He finished strongly, in' seventh place

Wright, the club's patron, preI seuted the Irvine Cup to the winner at the conclusion of the run, and congratulated him on his fine performance. METHODIST CLUB. Some thirty members of the Methodist Club gathered at Trinity Methodist Church on Saturday to follow a varied trail of about seven miles laid by C. Thompson and K. Syers. The trail led from the church, up Main Street, over the hills behind the Ewart Hospital, along Ruahine Street to Crawford Rbad, along the Town Belt, over Mt. Albert, and thus down Rintoul Street back to the starting point. Next week a race will be held between the Christchurch Methodist and the Wellington Methodist Clubs from Miramar Church. OLYMPIC CLUB. Members of the Kiatere Club, Masterton, took part in a combined run with Olympic at Lyall Bay and were the guests of the latter club. A course of about 5 miles was followed. Kiatere was well to the fore and won the event by getting four men home out of the first five. \ Points were allotted according to the number of members of each club to finish in tho first eight places. The run next Saturday will be held at Island Bay.
