LADIES' NIGHT
ORPHANS ENTERTAIN
Exclusive to men only, the Wellington Orphans' Club, on rare occasions entertain, ladies, and on Saturday their "ladies' night" was obviously a popular occasion, the Masonic Hall being filled to capacity.
The guests were received by the president. Orphan Colonel C. H. Weston, and Mrs. Weston, who wore a black gown • and fur • wrap
The hall was gaily decorated with multi-coloured streamers festooned across the ceiling, and coloured banners on the walls, the blue and gold of the club colours being much in evidence. Above the stage, in gold letters on.blue pennants, were the words "Welcome, Ladies." The blue canopy
over the dais • displayed the club emblem, in gold, and in the supper-room Iceland poppies decorated the, long supper tables. ■:■■.., On the dais with the president (who wore his insignia of office) were Orphan E. A. Herron and Orphan J. S. Martin. An excellent, and varied programme was presented. Selections were played by the orchestra, the musicians being club members. Songs were sung by Mr. T. Wood and Mr. K. Macauley. A novelty item, "On the Post Horn," was given by Orphan R. J: Simpson. Conjuring items were given by Mr. K. Leith. A comedian and conjurer,- Mr. A. Pennington, also gave items, and a clever performance was given by a humorous ventriloquist, Mr. C. Burridge, and his "Charlie McCarthy" doll. ■ ' ,' ; Guests of the Orphans' Club included . Mr. Martin, president of the Wei-1 lington Savage Club, and Mrs. Martin, also Mr. and Mrs. Pearce, Mr. Loader, president of the Athenian Club, ; and Mrs. Loader, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kane, of the Jewish Club, and Mr. and Mrs: Blackie, Mr. and Mrs. Vice, and Mi\ Ombler, all of the Charlie's Aunt Club. Executive members, many of whom were accompanied by their wives, included Messrs. R. A. Rolfe (secretary). H. Hill (treasurer), H. Elliott, T. Glover, R. E. Flaws, E. A. Herron, S. G. Collett/J. S. Martin, H. W. C. Mackintosh, J. Matthews, J. H. Mcllroy, R. B. Reynolds, F. A. Aveling, and J. W. Steele, W. Campbell, W. Elliott,.J. F. Johnson, A. Lawrie, M. E. Nolan. H. H. Parkinson, S. W. Ridley, F. M. Spellerberg, E, North, H. Godier (musij cal director and conductor), and H. Liardet Cstage manager). Mr. M. E. Nolan was master of ceremonies.
