CAPTAIN C. MATTHEWS

The death has occurred of Captain Charles Matthews, of the New Zealand Shipping Company, wrote "The Post's" London representative on June 5. He was taken ill recently after a return voyage and died in hospital. Captain Matthews had a fine record. During the war three of his ships were sunk by enemy action during the intensive German submarine campaign. Two troopships he commanded were torpedoed, and he was adrift on a raft with four soldiers for. 24 hours before they were picked up. He was one of the first Merchant Service officers to receive the D.S.C. for service of outstanding character. A son is living in New Zealand.
