FLOOD THREATS
SERIOUS POSITION IN
VICTORIA
I (Received July I,' 9 a.m.) j MELBOURNE, June 30. j Throughout north-east Victoria precautions are being taken to meet serious flood threats. Thousands of acres are already covered by the flood waters of the Ovens and King Rivers, and the water has blocked roads and driven many settlers from their homes. Using boats, Wangaratta police took fourteen people from flooded homes on the banks of the King River. Though the rain has ceased now, more is expected. The Goulbum River is still rising, and a great quantity of water has yet to come from its tributaries. From Corryong to the Hume dam many square miles of land on each side of the lUver Murray is deeply flooded. If the anticipated rain comes the town of Wangaratta, much of which is lowlying, may experience one of the worst floods in nisrory. Some homes are already flooded to a depth of four feet. The market, parks, and sports areas- are inundated.
