DAY IN PARLIAMENT

■• ■■■•- ■■-.-■ y A SOMBRE ATMOSPHERE

Party politics were relegated to the j background in; the House of Representatives yesterday while members joined in: paying tribute to the services given to the Dominion bys.former?legis-> lators who had died since Parliament sat last year. Friday is usually a day of incident in the House, but the atmosphere yesterday was sombre and dignified. The late Chairman of Committees (Mr. E. J. Howard), the Hon. A» D. McLeod, SV Thomas Wilford, Mr. George Mitchell, and Mr. Taite Te Tomo were among those who were honoured for their services to the country both: inside and outside ,the House, and after the long and some-1 times dreary debate on the Imprest Supply Bill the previous night members were in the mood to contemplate the records of those who had gone before and, perhaps, to form the determination to emulate them. Seldom is a whole day devoted to "obituaries," and so long was the list that when the adjournment was taken at 4.55 p.m. it had still not been disposed of. The House will meet again on Tuesday afternoon for formal business, and in the evening .the Address in Eeply debate will be commenced. The Legislative Council wasted no time in discussing the Imprest Supply BilVwhich was passed without debate in a ten-minute sitting during the i afternoon. ;
