UNITED SERVICES BALL

ATTENDED BY THEIR EXCELLENCIES

Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Viscountess Gahvay attended the United Services Club ball at St. Francis Hall last night, their presence being all that was required to make the occasion one of the most brilliant functions of the season. There were about five hundred guests. The hall was handsomely decorated. All the women were beautifully gowned and the majority of the men were in uniform.

Even outside there was an air of festivity. A red drugget was laid across the footpath. An awning supported by poles faced with huge fern fronds covered the entrance, and there were uniformed commissionaires waiting to help guests from their, cars and direct them into the hall.

The hall itself was a mass of flags, crests, greenery, wattle, and Iceland poppies, all beautifully arranged. Their Excellencies did not arrive until 9.20 p.m., and long before the hall was packed with people who had been received at the door by the president of the club, Lieutenant-Colonel F. Montgomery Spencer, and Mrs. Spencer. The mess kit of the members of the Navy, Arm}', and Air Force present vie in splendour with the bright colours of the dresses of the womenfolk. A great number of the men were wearing miniature decorations.

Their Excellencies' arrival in the ballroom was the signal for the playing of the National Anthem. Their escort included Major and Mrs. R. G. G. Byron, Captain Lord Dormer, and Lieutenant S. R. Le H. Lombard-Hob-son.

Lady Galway was a very graceful figure in a gown of softest pink heavy silk crepe. She also wore a row of miniature medals, and her jewels included a beautiful diamond brooch and a diamond tiara. Mrs. Byron was wearing dove grey chiffon with a cluster of pink flowers at the waistline. Mrs. Montgomery Spencer's picture frock and jacket were of old gold shot taffeta, the bodice of the frock being ruched.

Many people sat out dances for the pleasure of watching from the balcony the colourful scene the ballroom

floor presented. Liquid refreshments were available throughout the evening in the lounge behind the balcony, and supper was served downstairs in the spacious supper room. There was an excellent orchestra, and dancing continued until a late hour. The ball committee included Lieut.Col. F. M. Spencer, Lieut-Col. G. B.
