FEDERAL BY-ELECTION
BRISBANE, May 21
There was close polling in the Federal by-election in the Griffith electorate, caused by the death of Mr. F. M. Baker. The voting was as follows: —Mr. W. P. Conelan (Labour), 21,737; Mr. P. McCowan (United Australia Party), 16,418; Mr. E. H. Graham (Protestant Labour), 14,738.
The result will depend on the distribution of Mr. Graham's preference votes, the majority of which are expected to go to Mr. McCowan, giving him victory.
