A CHANCE FOR YOUNG MEN
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I would like to express my surprise at the Government's intention of importing 600 men from Australia for the railway workshops. No doubt, I am not the only one wondering why the Government does hot practise what it has been preaching for such a long time, and give the young men of New Zealand the opportunity of becoming skilled workmen, I mean those who did not get a chance owing to the depression. There are hundreds of these young men here with plenty of intelligence who would not be long in becoming skilled if given the chance, instead .of having to queue up day after day at the Placement Office or hunting round different jobs in the
hope of getting some labouring work. I again say, let the Government lead the way and study the young men of this country first, and others after, thereby giving private concerns some encouragement to do likewise. —I am., etc., ■
YOUNG LABOURER'S MOTHER.
