FROM THE SIDELINE

PLAYERS AND THE GAMES | Janes, Longbottom, and R. Ward, as usual, did most of the work in the victorious Waterside forward line against Seatoun. All three were in good form and their enterprise and willingness to make and seize opportunities are qualities that are worthy of emulation by other Wellington forwards. Ward scored the only goal. Hazel, in the centre berth, was the strength of the Waterside halves, though his wing men were far from weak. Jordan showed some remarkably long throwing-in.

Turkington, keeping goal for Marist against Petone, was the outstanding man on the "field. His brilliant defence stopped nearly a dozen Petone attempts at goal. He was never bustled and time and again successfully dummied his, way past two or three men before getting in his clearing kick.

Hughes and Haines, the Petone backs, did much to assist the continuous attack launched by their side during the second spell of the game against Marist, but they created dangerous situations occasionally by joining the general concentration of players in front of the Marist goal, thus leaving their goalie with no cover. Twice the empty field gave Marist good opportunities.

Paterson, Inside right for Petono, was in good form. He was particularly useful in inldfleld and frequently robbed the opposition of the bull by charging down on the man in possession. His good nerve makes this a valuable feature of his game.

Harris and Rolton were sound enough at full-back for Waterside, and S. Ward had only a moderately strenuous afternoon in goal, though lie had one or two narrow shaves.
