WELLINGTON V. ATHLETIC

Wellington won from Athletic, 9-8, and deserved to, in the curtain-raiser at Athletic Park. It was a game which did not have very much to it—a match, in fact, In which there was a large amount of wasted effort, ill-directed kicking, and little sustained- constructive work. Athletic could have won, but failure to back up at important moments, either through lack of knowledge or sheer poor condition, was costly. Wellington made a much better showing against the wind than with- it. The side's points were all the fruit of second-spell efforts when facing the breeze. Gavin scored a try for Wellington, and Lang kicked two penalty goals. Pelham scored a converted try and landed a penalty goal for Athletic. The referee was Mr. T. E. Colo.
