GARDEN EXPERT
A POSTPONED TRIP
(By Air Mail, from ''TTie Post's" London Representative.)
LONDON, April 3,
Mr. C. F. Lawrance retired at the end of March from the position of Northamptonshire Horticultural Superintendent, and he had intended to visit his son in New Zealand this year. The 8.8.C., however, has persuaded him to continue his broadcasting for a further year, so the trip to the Dominion has been postponed accordingly. During the' 25 years that Mr.. Lawrance held his position under the Northamptonshire County Council he so developed school gardening that the number of schools with gardens has grown from 26 to 90. He has encouraged commercial fruiting growing, and by his efforts proved its possibilities in a county that was thought to have little or no possibilities in this direction. In recent years he has built up a national and even Continental reputation by being regularly featured in the 8.8.C. broadcasts' to schools.
Among other bodies who will remember Mr. Lawrance gratefully is the Women's Institute. He has done much to help and encourage institutes in horticulture, and is probably the only male member of a Women's Institute Committee in the country, being a member of the County Federation's Agricultural Committee. He helped fo found a number of institutes. He has instructed students at the County Institute of Agriculture, Moulton, given lectures to allotment holders and others, and given advice, both by. letter and in person, to professional and amateur gardeners.
