ARMIES IN WAR ZONES

(Received May 20, noon.)

LONDON, May 19.

A message from Chungking says that the Chinese, making a counter-attack in North Hupeh, slaughtered 18,000 Japanese, defeating the encircling movement at Tangho where, two Japanese columns which had joined each other earlier became isolated from the main body owing to forced marches.' The Japanese are retreating southwards through the Tahung mountains towards Tsaoyang, conducting a running fight with their pursuers.

A Tokio message states that the Japanese claim to have cleared Northern Hupeh and Southern Honan of Chinese troops. • ■'
