SETTLEMENT AREA

TIGHTENING OF CONTROL

SHANGHAI, May 18,

Hundreds of barricades have been erected to assist British, French, and American troops and the international police to carry out the most extensive combing-out in the International Settlement's history.

The action is designed to silence the Japanese accusation that the municipality is insincere in its efforts to curb

anti-Japanese elements. Police and troops from dawn onward will question every pedestrian entering a Chinese house.

Four Chinese language newspapers two of which are British owned and one American owned, " have been suspended because of a report of a speech by General Chiang Kai-shek which was considered liable to hinder the preservation of order.
