STUDENTS' OPINION
CONSCRIPTION APPROVED
(Received May 20, 10.15 a.m.)
LONDON, May 19,
A ballot conducted by the undergraduates' council at Cambridge University resulted in 1869 votes being cast for the Government's conscription plan and 1247 against, while 2078 favoured a full military alliance between Britain and Russia and 703 opposed the proposal.
The vote was taken after the students had listened to an address by Mr. Winston Churchill.
Mr. Churchill urged that the national defence and foreign policy should be placed upon a planje above party and apart from political antagonisms.
He added that the Government, which had allowed Czecho-Slovakia to be broken and disarmed, was surprised and horrified when Herr Hitler marched into Prague, subjugated the Czechs, and stole all their belongings. The Government felt Herr Hitler had deceived and defrauded it even as did Signor Mussolini, v.horn it had confidently trusted.
The Government had turned round over a weekend and adopted the very policy that its opponents had long advocated. It contained the best hopes of peace and, if peace should be broken, the best hopes of victory and the survival of frefe nations.
The Government, he said, had now made commitments on all sides which, if resolutely carried out, coulu ward off all dangers.
