RAIN PROBABLE
A SOUTHERLY CHANCE
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Strong north-westerly winds to gales, but a change to southerly probable tomorrow. Fair at first, but some rain probable tonight and tomorrow. Temperatures mild, until the southerly change.
The forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued by the Meteorological Office at noon today, is for moderate to strong northerly to north-westerly winds, but' a change to southerly arriving shortly in the south, and extending northwards to Cook Strait within twenty-four hours. The weather will be unsettled in westerly districts, more especially in the South Island, with intermittent rain, elsewhere fair to fine at first, but later rain extending along the aast coast to beyond Cook Strait. Temperatures will be mild, but cooler with the southerly change.
An anti-cyclone centred over North Auckland has continued to control the meteorological situation, the weather over much of the Dominion during the last twenty-four hours having been fair to fine. Weak westerly depressions passing in the south, however, have caused moderate rains in westerly districts in the South Island, and this morning light rain had extended to parts of the North Island. Arthur s Pass had 77 points. Greymouth 52, and Westpon 41. Winds have been light and variable in the north, and elsewhere from between north-west and southwest. North-westerlies have become strong today in the Cock Strait area. Temperatures have risen further, and are now quite mild for this time of year.
Auckland had another good day yesterday, with a light to moderate northwesterly wind. The morning was cool and the afternoon mild, the maximum temperature being 64.1 degrees and the minimum 51.6 degrees. At 9 a.m. today the weather was overcast, but fine.
At Wellington the weather has been fine with passing cloud, hours of sunshine totalling 5.9. Temperatures during the day yesterday were mild, while the night was the warmest for about a month. The maximum temperature was 61.6 degrees, and the minimum 54.3 degrees. The northerly wind which prevailed was becoming strong this morning.
Christchurch had the warm temperatures frequently accompanying northwesterly winds, the maximum rising to 70.2 degrees. Though the weather was cloudy it was very pleasant. With a change of wind to the north-east in the afternoon, temperatures became cooler, the minimum being 48.9 degrees.
Dunedin also had a pleasant day yesterday, the wind being a light southeasterly one, and the weather sunny and mild. Conditions continued fine this morning.
