"SERIOUS MATTER"
SLEEPING IN CARRIAGES
"The Itailway Department regards this as a serious matter. From time to time there has been quite a lot of damage done to railway carriages,, and we have to send a man nightly around the railway yards to,try to detect this offence," said Sub-Inspector D. J. O'Neill in the Magistrate's Court today, when four men, John Eric Pullan, a labourer, aged 23. Bevt Charles Bergersen, a labourer, aged 40', Thomas Francis Reilly, a farm labourer, aged 47, and Richard Scambler, a miner, aged 34, were charged, before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., with being found without lawful excuse on enclosed premises. Sub-Inspector O'Neill said that they were found at 3.15 a.m. today asleep in a: railway van.
One of the accused said he had, a job to go.to on Monday. "It is funny how you chaps always have a job to go to," said the Magistrate.
Defendant: I have a job to go,to on Monday morning. M'• ■ The Magistrate: Well, you are going to be late for it—you will each be convicted and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour..
