PRIVATE VIEW

EXHIBITION OF PICTURES

LARGE GATHERING

The Autumn Exhibition of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts was opened last night at the Private View. Even without the prospect of seeing a collection of charming pictures a visit to the National Art Gallery would have been well worth while last night. It was such a beautifully clear, still night, and the magnificent building, presented a fine sight against the skyline, with its stately columns silhouetted against a background of light and the carillon, tower standing like a sentinel in the foreground. From the steps the view of the city lying in the hollow below was also entrancing. There was a sparkling brilliancy about the myriads of lights, and the greens and reds of the tall floodlit buildings gave extra beauty to the scene. Inside the building, as usual on these occasions, all was colour and light. Many very beautiful frocks and evening coats were worn, and were almost as interesting to see as the colourful pictures grouped on the walls. There was a far larger crowd than usual. Chairs were arranged at one ,end of the main gallery for the official opening, but there were not enough to accommodate all the guests. A large bowl of lovely hydrangeas; stood on the table at which the official party was seated. Mr. G. G. Gibbes Watson, president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, performed the opening ceremony and others in the official party were Mrs. Gibbes Watson, Sir Harry Batterbee, Miss Isabel Biggar, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hunt, Mr. W.
