HUTT VALLEY EVENTS

PROGRAMME OPENED

The Hutt Valley physical fitness week programme was opened on Saturday afternoon at the Petone Beach by a swimming carnival and a lifesaving demonstration. The Mayor of Petone (Mr. G. London) explained that for the purpose of the carrying out of various events Petone and Lower Hutt had combined in a programme to cover both districts. He hoped that residents of both boroughs would patronise all the events, for which no charges were being made. The object of the programmes was to show not only the value of a training in sports, but how leisure could best be employed. It was the duty of everyone to take an interest in, at least, one sports organisation. Mr. London made ah appeal for assistance in raising funds to cover the amount required by the Centennial Zoning Committee. He thanked the Titahi Bay Surf Life-saving Club for helping in the demonstration. Mr. J. W. Andrews, Mayor of Lower Hutt, expressed his thanks to all who were helping, the life-saving team, the committee, the band, the competitors, and the Press. The nation, if it was tb hold its own against other nations who were making a religion of physical fitness, must also become physically fit. He hoped the events of the week would be a stimulus to everyone. A demonstration of surf life-saving j'and;the resuscitation of the apparently drowned was given by a Titahi Bay Surf Life-saving Club team, the leader giving a running commentary in explanation of the work of the team. Mr. W. J. Penhall demonstrated the best method of teaching swimming. There was a chariot race on the beach between teams, in which the Petone team was first and Titahi Bay second, and a 1200 yds open swimming [race, which resulted: H. Warburton 1, C. Harvey 2, N. Rimmer 3. Yesterday reference was made in the various churches to the value of physical fitness. Tonight at 7 o'clock off the Petone Beach a marine procession will be held, in which boats of all kinds will take part. At 8 o'clock an athletic meeting will be held at Lower Hutt. Other events will be:—Tuesday, youth night at the Hutt Recreation Ground, with a procession from the Hutt Bridge at 7.15 p.m.; gas cooking demonstration at Petone at 3 p.m. Wednesday: Special athletic and cycling meeting at the Petone Recreation Ground at 8 p.m., preceded by a procession from the Petone railway station at 7.30 pjn. Thursday: Swimming carnival at Riddiford Baths at 7.45 p.m. Saturday: Redding Shield regatta at 2 p.m. at Petone.
