NOURSE BATS SPLENDIDLY

Although South Africa was compelled to follow-on in the second cricket Test against the touring English team, defeat was easily averted, the score at stumps in the second innings being 201 for two wickets, van der Byl and Rowan making most of the runs. In reply to England's score of 599 for nine, declared, South Africa, in the first innings, made 286 (Nourse 120; Verity five for 70).

Two Tests have now been played in the present series and both drawn.

South. Africa's first innings was continued today from the overnight score of 213 for six. wickets, the not out bats--men being Nourse (74) and Balaskas (28). At the luncheon adjournment the score was 283 for seven, Balaskas -- having added only a single before being caught. • Nourse was still at the wickets; with 120 on the board and was partnered by his captain, Melville, who had made 20.

Nourse, who fell a victim to Verity on the resumption without adding tq his score, batted in very plucky fashion for 146 minutes. He hit a 6 and twelve 4's.

Rowan was missed when he had made 2 in the second innings, after which the South Africans settled down to defensive play.

Van der Byl played a stylish- innings. He hit a 6 and nine 4's. Details:—
