WILFUL HANDLING
DAMAGING MESSAGES
CHARGES AGAINST BRITISH SUBJECTS
(Received January 5, 12.30 pjn.)
LONDON, January 4.
It is understood that Mr. Ernest Golding, British pro-consul at San Sebastian, and his wife, who were arrested by the Spanish nationalist authorities, are at present in separate cells at San Sebasiian gaol and will be tried before a military court on charges of wilfully "passing unauthorised and damaging messages across the frontier. The insurgents are allotting counsel for them.
The Hendaye correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says that Mr. C. B. Jerram, British agent at Burgos, has been instructed to press for an explanation of the arrests and to do everything possible to assist Mr. and Mrs. Golding.
It is understood that the British Government is convinced of Mr. Golding's innocence and will welcome a public trial.
